88th Annual N.C. State Singing Convention

Rain was not enough to stop this year's 88th annual State Singing Convention in Benson as an estimated crowd of 4,000 braved occasional showers to enjoy a weekend of southern gospel music.

This year's event started Friday night with a show by last year's winners Fortress; The Dennis Family, winners of last year's Consolation Cup; The Taylors; Resurrection Quartet; Called Out; and The Trinity Trio.

Professional groups Brian Free and Assurance and

the Triumphant Quartet also made appearances over the weekend.

As far as the competition, which was held on Saturday, "We probably had as good a talent this year as we ever had," Convention President Dan Holland said. "I sure wouldn't have wanted to be a judge."

This year's winners were 7-year-old Emma Maples and her 9-year-old brother Wesley in the junior division; the Friendly Chapel Choir from Friendly Chapel Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church in "North Downtown" McGee's Crossroads in the choir division; Robbin and Joey Maples in the duet division; Four Part Harmony in the female quartet division; the Dennis Family in both the mixed quartet and family divisions; and the Arise Quartet in the male quartet division.

This year's Consolation Cup winner was Fortress, a group from the Benson/Clayton/Zebulon area. And last, but not least, this year's Grand Trophy winner was The Taylors.
