Cafergot is a medicine that combines two active ingredients - ergotamine and caffeine, and is often used to treat and prevent migraine headaches. It belongs to the class of drugs called ergot alkaloids and prevents blood vessels in the head from expanding and causing the sensation of pain. You can take up to 6 tablets a day if you follow the recommendations of your health care provider, but make sure you do not take more than that. If you are allergic to either of the two active ingredients of this medicine you are not supposed to take Cafergot as it may cause severe allergic reaction. Also make sure your doctor knows about any medicines you are currently taking, including either of the two active ingredients and any other medicines.

Let your doctor know if you ever had or have high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, kidney or liver disease, circulation problems and severe blood infection. Some of the side effects you may experience when taking this medicine include nausea and vomiting. Unless your side effects become severe and interfere with your everyday life they should not be reported to your health care provider. Never share your Cafergot with people to whom it was not prescribed.
